Make the most of your study time with these five tips

Exam time is upon us, which basically translates to procrastinating on studying until the very last minute and then drinking more coffee than humanly possible. On that note, here are my Top 5 study tips to make it a little easier for when you final do stop procrastinating and start studying.

  1. Study with other people in your class, I honestly can’t express how helpful this really is. I personally find having a Google Doc that's shared with a few people and everyone is writing notes and explaining topics one of the most helpful study tips imaginable.

  2. Colour coordinate your notes for easy access. Nothing makes finding the information you need for that history exam easier than knowing blue is for France, red is for Asia and so on.

  3. Know what motivates you and use it to your advantage. Whether it's chocolate or an episode of your favorite show, set goals and then reward yourself as you achieve them to keep motivated.

  4. Take a break from studying solely from books, lecture slides, or websites and switch to videos. A few places to get good study videos are Crash Course and Its History, both channels on Youtube that are reliable sources for almost every subject.

  5. Sleep, sleep, sleep it may seem more valuable to study until 3 a.m. the night before the exam; but studies show that getting enough sleep before a test is actually more important than those extra few hours of studying. If you don't have enough sleep your brain won't be able to recall information correctly and all your hard work will be for nothing.

So there you have it, my Top 5 study tips to get through exam season. Also check out the article “The science of studying: How students can put their brains to best use” on the CBC website.
