LLC organizes twelve days of Christmas fun

Many people know the classic Christmas carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas” where the singer is given crazy gifts on each of the twelve days, so this year at BML the LLC group organized their own twelve days to take place on each of the last twelve days before winter break.

The events included snowflake decorating on December 7 as well as red, white, and green day December 8 (both postponed to the following week due to inclement weather days). December 11 saw Christmas ornament decoration and the following day was karaoke. On the eighth day before winter break students showed much holiday spirit by sporting festive hats. For students who didn't have a hat or had forgotten to bring one, Ms. Imrie and friends were handing out elf and Santa hats.

The next day marked the halfway point of this festivity, with Christmas games like trivia for audience volunteers with candy canes for prizes.

Friday, December 15 brought about holiday pajama day, with many joyous Lakers in comfy attire. Candy cane gram delivery, followed by a Christmas movie shown in the cafeteria during lunch and gingerbread cookie decorating the next day brought everyone to the last two days of Christmas at school.

But it wasn't over yet. Santa came to visit for photos on the eleventh day, and while some students were hesitant for a photo many jumped on the opportunity. December 22 was the last day of school festivities and students and teachers alike wore “ugly” Christmas sweaters, including Mr. Willett with a green holiday suit.

While students participated most actively in the dress up and food-related activities, most enjoyed all the events. For the students who don't celebrate Christmas, however, there were some concerns about inclusiveness and showing “holiday spirit” rather than the common Christmas spirit.

Many Grade 9s specifically were surprised by this event as in most elementary schools many holiday traditions are winter themed, and only some involve Christmas. On the other hand, some people believe this celebration is fully acceptable as it's what is more commonly seen in the community and it does not discriminate against other holidays.

Regardless, the holiday season is a time of togetherness with family and friends, selflessness, as well as fun festivities, which is what the aim of the Twelve Days of Christmas at BML was intended to promote.
