Assembly honours soldiers' sacrifices

On Friday, November 10, BMLSS came together to recognize the enormous sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers, past, present and future.

Assemblies were held in the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre. Each grade assembly began with “O Canada” per-formed by Mr. Jordan’s senior music class.

The history of Remembrance Day followed. This included the reading of “Suicide in the Trenches,” a poem written by Siegfried Sassoon. After that, Kelsie Marsh performed “Zombie”, originally by The Cranberries, with Mr. Jordan lending a hand on guitar and backup vocals. During this song, Ben King and Lily Lu showcased our school’s dance class with a heart-warming lyrical performance about the tragedy of war.

The assemblies ended with a heartfelt speech by our principal Mr.Willett, recounting an emotional story of his son and nephew and reminding us to be grateful for the opportunities and freedoms that the sacrifices of others have granted us in Canada. “They gave their lives and their future so we could live in peace today,” said Mr.Willett. He then laid the wreath, made by Mrs. Magee, onto the cross and paused for a moment of reflection.

At eleven o’clock, the school gathered on Main Street for two minutes of silence, which began with the playing of “The Last Post.”

We’d like to extend our thanks to the performing students, staff and guests who contributed to our Remembrance Day ceremony, and to our soldiers who fought, and continue to fight, for us and our freedom.
