The BMLSS improv team has again made an impressive showing at the Canadian Improv regionals in Sudbury, placing second out of all of Northern Ontario. We talked to Charlie Wagner-Chazalon about the team's recent trip to get a little more insight into the world of improv.
Q: How did you get to Sudbury? I heard the bus was cancelled due to freezing rain.
A: Yeah BML was pretty much the only school that was open that day. We got to the school around 8:30 and found out that the bus was cancelled. One of our teammates, Graeme, has his own car so we got him to drive some of our improvisers. My parents drove some people and Liam McKinnon’s parents drove. We got there on time!
Q: Who were your teammates at the competition?
A: We had eight competitors and one alternate. The nine of us were myself, Graeme Vandermolen, Breanna Carroll, Ben King, Katona Files, Bella Goudie, Liam McKinnon, Justin Kopysh, and Shaman Johann.
Q: How many teams did you compete against?
A: There were 10 teams altogether at the competition.
Q: What place did the team come in?
A: We came in second by about 11 points. It was very close.
Q: I heard you got a special award? What’s up with that?
A: I got a leadership award. I received it because of my leadership in getting the team to Sudbury as well as my contributions throughout the year. All the teams nominate people. It's usually coaches who get nominated but this year they nominated me and I won.
Q: By that answer I can tell you really like improv.
A: Yeah, I really do. This is my 7th year in the Improv Games. Both my older siblings played while they were in high school. I went with them to regionals and nationals when they competed and I competed with my brother for two years. So improv really is a huge part of my life.
Q: What’s your favorite part about improv?
A: I really like the opportunity it presents to just create your own story. Also the opportunity for friendship and having a second family within your team. You can get some really amazing friends out of it who all work with you to make it an amazing experience.
Q: Do you use any of your improv skills in life?
A: Absolutely, pretty much everyday I’m using something I learned in improv. Whether it's analyzing stories or getting your ideas across effectively or time management skills since you only have four minutes per scene. It also teaches really amazing teamwork because you have to rely on your team in improv.
Q: Any last words?
A: I just really think anyone who gets a chance to try improv should absolutely do that whether it’s at the competitive level or just for fun. It’s really amazing for confidence.
